USS Nimitz-Class Aircraft Carriers - What Makes the U.S. Navy So Powerful?

Popular fact

The US Navy operates ten Nimitz class aircraft vessels, and no other navy on this planet who has something far close to this massive warship, the largest of their types to commissioning USS Gerald R. Ford in 2017 . With more than 6,000 personnel presenting onboard including 3,200 sailors and 2,480 pilots, a length of 317 meters (1,092 feet) and the transfer of 102,000 tons of these ships is basically a floating city - complete with their own private airport.

The first class ship, USS Nimitz (CVN-68), was nicknamed "old salt" and was assigned in May 1975, named after Admiral Chester Nimitz, who led the US Navy through the Second World War. He was first deployed to the Indian Ocean during the Iranian hostage crisis and since then recorded long distances, providing security at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and then served in the Persian Gulf after a storm desert operation. Recently USS Nimitz was deployed against Isis in Iraq and Syria, where the F / A-18 took part in the battle of Afar in 2017. Old salt has been on the spread of the Persian Gulf since 2018.

Nine additional Nimitz class operators have been built, with the last class, USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) was assigned in January 2009.

Nuclear-powered operators have two reactors and four shafts for propulsion, which allows warships to reach the highest speed of 30+ knots (34.5mph). Each Nimitz class has a 50-year life expected with one medium refueling, but in October 2020, the US Navy announced that it considered an extension of the life of the ship service, which had refueling and overhaul finished from 1998 to 2001 .

Ten of the Nimitz class aircraft carrier was built between 1968 and 2006 in Newport News Shipbuilding Company (now the Grumman Northrop ship system) in Newport News, Virginia in the largest Drydock in the western hemisphere with a unit cost of around $ 8.5 billion (constant year FY 12 dollars ). Because USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-72), the four-class carrier to be built, all have been produced in modular construction that allows all parts to be welded along with plumbing and installed electrical pipes, increasing efficiency.
